EAST COAST REVETMENT & RIP RAP CONSTRUCTION
Coastal Marine Construction designs and installs revetment systems, including rip rap shoreline protection, to help protect shorelines and cliffs from erosion caused by heavy rain, flooding, and wave action.
Our team works directly with engineers to fit each system to the site, using carefully sized and placed stone to stabilize the shoreline and dissipate wave energy.
THE FULL SCOPE.
SELF-PERFORMED.
Coastal Marine Construction installs revetment systems to protect shorelines from erosion caused by waves, currents, and flooding. These sloped protective structures often use rip rap, carefully sized and placed stone that helps dissipate wave energy and stabilize the shoreline. Our team works directly with project engineers to fit each system to the site, from shoreline preparation through final stone placement.
PLANNED
AROUND THE WATER.
Every shoreline presents different challenges. We evaluate wave action, tidal range, soil conditions, existing erosion, and nearby infrastructure to understand the protection needed. Site access and the condition of any existing shoreline structures also help guide construction planning.
We work with project engineers to establish the revetment slope, rip rap size and gradation, filter requirements, and placement depth. Planning also accounts for environmental requirements, site access, and any supporting pile driving, sheet piling, or concrete work needed to complete the system.
Our crew prepares the shoreline and base to the engineered specifications. This includes shaping the slope and installing the specified filter layer or geotextile fabric to help prevent underlying soil from washing out beneath the rip rap. Sediment controls are incorporated where required.
We place and arrange the rip rap to form the revetment’s protective outer layer, following the specified slope, thickness, and stone gradation. Throughout installation, we review changing site conditions with project engineers and check the completed work against the plans. The finished system provides durable shoreline protection that can be maintained by resetting or adding stone as needed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is revetment used for?
Revetment is a sloped structure built to protect shorelines, cliffs, and seawalls from erosion caused by waves, currents, and flooding.
What materials are used in revetment construction?
Revetment systems commonly use stone, riprap, concrete, or engineered materials, chosen based on the site’s wave exposure and erosion severity.
How is revetment different from a seawall?
A seawall is typically a vertical or near-vertical structure that blocks wave energy directly, while revetment is a sloped, armored surface that absorbs and dissipates wave energy along the shoreline.
Does revetment require permits?
Most revetment projects in or near water require environmental permitting. Coastal Marine Construction works with project engineers to account for permitting and environmental requirements during design.
How long does revetment installation take?
Timeline depends on the length of shoreline being protected and site accessibility, but Coastal Marine Construction sequences design and installation to minimize delays once permitting is complete.
Can revetment be repaired instead of replaced?
In many cases, yes. Revetment systems can often be repaired or reinforced rather than fully replaced, depending on the extent of erosion or storm damage.
